Exhibition in a box

Context driven design: place, client, time.
The box contains yarrong [sand] collected from Minjerribah [North Stradbroke Island] the world’s second largest sand island. It is the context for many of our projects and a source of inspiration and research. The island sand constantly changes. It shifts in the wind, it’s claimed by the tides, and it defines & redefines Minjerribah’s physical extents. It is part of Quandamooka country, supporting a unique and delicate ecosystem.
Our practice attempts to understand a project’s context and respond through architecture. As the sand in our practice box travels for this exhibition, it becomes further disrupted and removed from its place of origin. It will crack, dry out and lose its form. This process mirrors our understanding of design clarity the more it is removed from its context. We undertake our professional responsibilities to our clients and the project context seriously, however [like a child’s sand box] we pursue our tasks with experimentation and light hearted enjoyment.

This post describes the concept of “Exhibition in a Box,” which shows how design and architecture can be presented in a simple and portable way for exhibitions. It is interesting how creative presentation methods make ideas easier to share.
