context
‘One Mooloomba’ presents two modestly scaled, barefoot island holiday dwellings on a steep south facing site with spectacular ocean views. This developer project maintains the prevalent settlement pattern of small, fibro ‘Straddie’ beach houses embracing a spirit of ‘making-do’ when on holidays.
opportunity
The client’s brief was for a refined but basic camping-like experience for their large family and friends’ group to enjoy year-round. Both dwellings were tuned to facilitate the habits and rituals of coastal life: wake/swim/eat/nap/repeat, with plenty of towel rails! Every space has an opportunity to connect uniquely with the surrounding landscape and the spectacular ocean view either directly or reflected in mirrors.
solution
The heart of the home is a sun-filled landscaped courtyard and fire pit open to the northeast, framed by the house, anchored by a prefabricated plunge pool and retained pandanus trees. The owner’s home has become a retreat during the week to work remotely or conduct overseas business, an antidote to hectic mainland life.
